International Consortium of Academic Language and Learning Developers

Dear ALL Managers/Heads,

Welcome to the ALL Managers/Heads’ Toolbox!

In November, 2016, thirty-nine ALL Managers/Heads from the Australian and New Zealand Universities gathered under one roof to renew their knowledge of each other’s operations, to discuss the ways they lead their ALL Units/Centres, to share institutional policy and to discuss the ALL Centre’s contribution to practice and research in order to enhance the learning experience for all students.

This forum recognized the importance of an ongoing dialogue amongst the ALL Managers/Heads and it was suggested to make this conference/meeting an annual event. While this outcome seems very positive and is a great way to move forward, the question was ‘How would it be possible to create an ongoing Managers’ support and to develop an initiative which is cost effective and sustainable long term?’ The discussion of this question generated interest locally and internationally.

This project aims at developing an online toolbox which will contain hands-on tips from current Managers/Heads of Australian and overseas Academic Language and Learning Centres, contextualized leadership initiatives, reporting protocols, ‘managing up’ strategies, and ‘positioning’ strategies within our local and national higher education contexts and contextualised best practice examples. We anticipate that the tool box will also provide ideas that can inspire managers to take those ideas a step further and implement or use them as a spring board for improving existing initiatives or creating new ones.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Association for Academic Language and Learning (AALL), Australia, for providing financial support for this project and the International Consortium for Academic Language and Learning Developers (ICALLD), Canada, for hosting the Toolbox on the ICALLD website.

We look forward to continuing our dialogue and updating the Toolbox with new resources.

With best wishes.

Elena Verezub and Bronwyn James – Project Leaders and Elena Sinchenko – Project Officer.
